Wind Down Wednesday: Adult Coloring

So now that we’re adults, we have a lot of responsibility, and with responsibility comes stress. But can you remember back to the time when you had none?! What was your biggest concern? Being picked last on the dodgeball team? Your parents taping over your favorite recorded show on VHS? Or maybe going outside the lines while coloring? I think we can all admit we’d give anything to have these be the worst parts of our days now. We need to take some time to de-stress regularly, so that we don’t just combust and we get that report done by deadline to keep our jobs to keep our paychecks to then keep our shelters and put food on the table and clothes on our back….wow, better not F up.

This is the first of a new weekly bit I plan on posting with ways to wind it down.

I’m a pretty stressed out person 98% of the time. My Mom, being the ultimate Mom that she is, decided to introduce me to adult coloring. She came to visit one day with a bag full of coloring books and a brand new 96 pack of Crayola crayons. As a kid this would have been the best day ever; as an adult, I just gave her a quizzical look. “Coloring books? Don’t you know I don’t have time to COLOR??” She calmly stated she read about adult coloring being a great way to de-stress. I decided to put this theory to Google. And what do you know, there have actually been studies done that prove that coloring can have a de-stressing effect. According to Huffington Post, “when we focus on a particular activity, we focus on it and not on our worries. But it also ‘brings out our imagination and takes us back to our childhood, a period in which we most certainly had a lot less stress.'”

Psychologist Antoni Martinez said [in the article for Huffington Post] “I recommend it as a relaxation technique. We can use it to enter into a more creative, freer state,” he assures. We can also use it to connect with how we feel, since depending on our mood we choose different colors or intensity. “I myself have practiced that. I recommend it in a quiet environment, even with chill music. Let the color and the lines flow.”

Reading this article alone made me instantly intrigued. In the bag of fun from my Mom, included one adult coloring book and a few kids’ coloring books [ya know, the one’s with big kittens and princesses].

The adult coloring book had pages a little more complex.

Wind-Down Wednesday: Adult Coloring Wind-Down Wednesday: Adult Coloring

I tried these first and immediately found myself getting frustrated because the crayon tip was too big for such detailed designs. [yeah, I’m a perfectionist even when it comes to coloring] However, in the same HP article, cartoonist Antonio Fraguas stated this tip for beginners “Despite how highly stressed you may be, the most important thing is to not use pen markers with alcohol that go through the paper. The proper thing is to use crayons.”

So, to not lose my interest, I moved on to the kids coloring books. These looked way more my style.

Wind-Down Wednesday: Adult Coloring

I sat for TWO hours coloring. I’ve neverbeenso relaxed. When I was done, I felt like I had a new perspective on life.

I went ahead and invested in some colored pencils which make a huge difference in the adult coloring books, but the kids pages are fun too. And that’s the thing with coloring as an adult, you make the decisions! As long as you are feeling relaxed and pushing some troubles away for a few minutes or a few hours, do what works! You’re an adult, you can buy yourself whatever coloring book you want or browse the online sites that offer free printables! No parent permission needed! You want florals? Kids + Adults. Animals? Kids + Adults. Geometrics? Kids/Adults. Television? Adults. Drink? Adults. The coloring world is your oyster!

Sure, coloring isn’t going to fix all of life’s problems, but it may clear your mind to better focus and organize the important things. Give it 10 minutes and if it’s not working, pour a glass of wine and wind down.

Can We All Take a Moment to Applaud REI?

REI announced yesterday that they will be closing on Black Friday this year. You know that day after Thanksgiving where stores open at midnight and people are leaving their families to stand in lines for $50 off a TV. REI is going against the grain and paying their employees to go outside. REI wants the world to share how they go outside on Black Friday via the hashtag #OptOutside.

I think this is an inspiring concept and more companies should follow suit. In a short message from REI’s CEO, Jerry Stritzke,  “For 76 years, our co-op has been dedicated to one thing and one thing only: a life outdoors. We believe that being outside makes our lives better. And Black Friday is the perfect time to remind ourselves of this essential truth. We’re a different kind of company—and while the rest of the world is fighting it out in the aisles, we’ll be spending our day a little differently. We’re choosing to opt outside, and want you to come with us.” Read the entire message here.

They even have a countdown on their homepage, as of right now we’ve got 30 days and 17 hours. Let’s take a moment to applaud REI for being different and I hope to see you all outside on Black Friday!

The 90s Are Coming Back to Nickelodeon (Again) Via The Splat!

I was born in the late 80s, but really grew up in the 90s. My life was consumed by boy bands, AOL (what up Smarterchild), Skip-Its and of course, Nickelodeon. I got style from Clarissa, humor from All That, aspiration from GUTS and terror from Are you Afraid of The Dark.

Back in 2011, TeenNick started rerunning episodes of some of the iconic 90s television series on a block called The 90s Are All That.

The 90s Are Coming Back to Nickelodeon (Again)

The block ran midnight to 2 a.m. with an encore following from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. Because I was now grown at this point and couldn’t stay up at all hours of the night to watch old television shows, I used the wonderful technology of DVR and it was a beautiful thing! I would come home after a long day at work (channeling my inner 90s kid and imagining coming home after a long day of school), started to prep dinner (instead of just grabbing a snack) and plopped on the couch and picked one of the recorded shows to watch.

I remember Rugrats and Hey Arnold! were some of the first series to rerun and I enjoyed them so much! Tommy Pickles was such a go-getter, Helga Pataki was a psycho and there I was full of nostalgia. And then the same series were rerunning and I never knew exactly when it was happening. The blocks would go away after a few months and then return again and because TeenNick wasn’t one of my regularly watched channels, I’d miss the memos. The 90s are All That continued various blocks of reruns from 2011 to 2014.

Fast Forward to 2015. Incase you missed it, the 90s are coming back, yet again! This time, it’s called The Splat.  In a statement, Nickelodeon said The Splat will kick off on TeenNick on October 5, serving up a “multiscreen content destination…aggregating the most beloved Nick content from the 1990s and beyond” on televisions and computers everywhere at TheSplat.com every night from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The 90s Are Coming Back to Nickelodeon (Again)

I’ve sat and watched some of the kids’ shows today and they will never live up to what we had as 90s kids. They’re actually pretty bad, I don’t blame kids for not being interested, they can get much more quality from anything on the Internet. What we had was pure gold. It was also a very different time. We didn’t have access to what kids have today.

I will never be against the return of these 90s sitcoms, as they will always feel like childhood to me. But TeenNick, don’t toy with us, give us ALL THE GOODS! None of this, CatDog for one month, followed by Rocko for one month; we want all the episodes of all the series! Aaaah Real Monsters!!!, The Amanda Show, Roundhouse, Hey Dude, KaBlam!, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Salute Your Shorts, Double Dare, Figure It Out, Doug, Clarissa Explains It All, Wild & Crazy Kids, Secret World of Alex Mack, Animorphs, GUTS, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Wild Thornberry’s, and even Nick News (Yes! remind us what happened in the real world during the 90s)!

Product Review: Tubular Original Buff Headwear

Before our trip to Peru this year, we wandered around REI for awhile seeing what shiny new things we could purchase. As I was browsing, I came across something that looked like a cross between a scarf and a headband; having no idea what it was, I picked it up and started reading about the Tubular Original Buff [futher referred to as the Buff] headwear. It went on to explain how it’s wind resistant, controls odor, breathable, quick-drying, and can be worn 12 different ways.

Being that we were about to embark on a trip that involved the humid Amazon Rainforest, hiking to the peaks of mountains and exploring the cities in between, this seemed like a product that could handle it all and still allow me to be somewhat fashionable. So I picked out the ‘Motion’ color, paid the measly $20 and hoped for the best (but also didn’t expect much).

The Tubular Original Buff - Motion

This product is like an angel from heaven; I’ve neverbeenso happy to have bought this last minute item. We packed as light as we could and the Buff took up 0% space. It is super tiny; I just kept it in my purse while flying or in the top compartment of my pack while exploring. I’ll get into the major details of our trip in a later post, but I wore the Buff everywhere.

The Amazon Rainforest is hot and humid and pretty gross, BUT beautiful. We did hikes in 100 degree weather in bright sunlight; the Buff kept my head cool and wicked away sweat pretty quickly.

Product Review: Tubular Original Buff Motion Headwear

Let’s just say spending four days in the Amazon Rainforest, sleeping and showering in huts does not leave you smelling your greatest. Once we returned to civilization in Cusco, we had to do a load of laundry; as we were deciding which items would be the ones we washed (since laundry is uber expensive), I picked up the Buff and to my surprise, it smelled fine! Which meant I didn’t have to go without it for the day and could wear it as we hiked to the peak of Huayna Picchu.

Getting to the peak of Huayna Picchu was NOT a walk in the park. It was hard. But that’s for another post. My point here is that it’s almost 9,000 feet above sea level so it was COLD and WINDY! But I wore the Buff and I was warm! Instead of focusing on the temperature, I was able to focus on not falling off the side of a mountain!

We also did some light leisure activity such as feeding llamas and alpacas!! It was a little chilly but I wanted to keep my hair down, so I treated the Buff as an infinity scarf of sorts. It wasn’t too heavy and kept my neck nice and warm!

There are so many other ways to wear the Buff – and it comes in a ton of different colors, I’ll be picking up one or two more so I can wear them interchangeably! Definitely a travel must-have!

15 Tips for Enjoying the Wedding Dress Search

You’re engaged?! Congrats! You’re a supportive MOH, Bridesmaid or MOB reading this in hopes to prep your Bride-To-Be?! That’s sweet of you! Either way, wedding dress shopping is in your near future and you’re looking for some assistance for how all this is supposed to go down. You’re in luck! Take a deep breath and soak it all in!

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m extremely indecisive and a big lover of fashion..the two coupled together proved to be a bit tough when it came to picking out my wedding dress. I went to six shops and tried on 100+ dresses. Consultants would ask me what I didn’t like about certain dresses and I couldn’t pin point it, I just knew it wasn’t mine. Then finally, I found the dress I couldn’t take off. It was beautiful and completely different than anything I imagined I’d wear or pick out. Naturally, before my first appointment, I googled how to have a successful wedding shopping experience. I didn’t come up with much and a lot of what I read online or saw on TV about how a wedding dress appointment should go ended up not even working for me. That being said, here are 15 tips I’ve learned along the way that I wish I’d heard beforehand!

1. You Don’t Need to Know What You’re Looking For
While it’s fun to think you have an idea of what you’re looking for in a wedding dress; just keep in mind, there’s a very big possibility you end up with something completely different. Before my first appointment, I spent days printing photos and style numbers of dresses I wanted to try on and organizing them in a pretty little white wedding binder, to basically have it ignored for the most part. Consultants are going to ask for some key words and then basically have you try on dresses and gauge what you like/don’t like from there. Don’t waste your time printing out millions of photos, have an idea in your head, but keep an open mind.

2. Bring As Many Guests As You Deem Appropriate
When I started making appointments at shops, I received shocked responses when I told them I would be bringing 4-6 people with me. A few even said they couldn’t accommodate me if I brought more than 2 people (red flag, IMO – this is a special time for you that you want to share with people, a stranger shouldn’t be dictating that – their loss anyway). Like I said, I am extremely indecisive, I NEED opinions from the people important to me. The places I ended up having the most fun at, were when I brought 6 of my ladies, we brought champagne and we just had fun! It took so much pressure off and I felt much more comfortable in my skin.

3. It’s Okay to Be Indecisive
While many bride-to-be’s get a lot of flack for being indecisive, I say when it comes to your wedding dress, why not be? This is the most important dress you’ll ever wear and on a day when all eyes are on you! If time allows, be indecisive! If you aren’t happy about something with the dress, but you can’t pin point it, don’t get frustrated, just take it off and move on to the next. I dealt with one consultant who made me feel so uncomfortable when I couldn’t specify what it was that I didn’t like and it was a terrible experience. I ended up just saying I liked dresses so that she would stop pressuring me (needless to say, I didn’t return).

4. Take Pictures
Before my first appointment, I didn’t even think about not being able to take pictures, I figured that was a given, but to my surprise most of the shops I went to did not allow photography. However, pictures are necessary! There are so many dresses I either wouldn’t have remembered or realized how I felt about them without being able to see a photo after and process it. I told all of the consultants that my Grandmother couldn’t be there and she was the one paying for the dress (which was 90% true) and that she needed to see it before I made a decision. Luckily, this worked. Ultimately, the consultant wants the bride to be happy, so hopefully if you have a good one, they’ll work with you. Try not to take no for an answer; trust me, the pictures are important. Bonus: you can print off the pictures of the dresses that weren’t the one and save them in a journal to remember and show your fiancé after the wedding!

5. Try EVERYTHING On
Okay, maybe not everything, but this is the only time you’ll get to try on wedding dresses in your life, why not make the most of it! There were a few times where I was nervous that maybe I’d just never find anything, but I also had a ton of fun in the interim. Your consultant asks if you want to try on more, if you’re up for it, why not! Your mom picks out a hideous number that you could never see yourself in, give it a shot! You may end up falling in love with something you would have never chosen. Which brings me to my next tip….

6. Know When to Put Your Foot Down
If you’re no longer having fun and no longer ‘up for it,’ then say No. You may be worried you’ll hurt feelings, but again, this is the time to be somewhat selfish. I agree with trying on the gown your future MIL fell in love with to be nice, but you don’t need to keep it on and you don’t need to try on any others. The consultant is pulling the appointment into an entirely different direction than what you’re liking, then ask her to take a detour, it will save everyone time.

7. Do Your Hair and Makeup
You are trying on a dress that you plan to wear on a day when you’ll be the most beautiful gal at the ball. You might as well give the dresses a fair shot by at least primping your face a bit. I found that I felt so much more beautiful in dresses when I actually looked put together vs. rolling out of bed, no makeup, hair a mess. Trust me, it makes a difference.

8. Extend the Invitation
I worried about inviting my bridesmaids and Mom and my fiance’s family to multiple appointments because I didn’t want them to feel obligated to attend, but I also didn’t know who would be free when and if everyone’s schedules would align. As expected, schedules did not align (in the slightest), so I ended up just making the appointments and sending an email with the dates and locations and allowed them to decide which one’s they’d like to attend (if any). It ended up working out and I think everyone who attended genuinely enjoyed themselves.

9. Don’t Stress if You Don’t Have Your Wedding Shoes
People started asking me what my wedding shoes looked like and if I was bringing them to my appointments so they could measure and I just sat there thinking how am I supposed to pick my shoes when I don’t even have my dress and I’m 14 months away. You don’t need to bring shoes to try on your dress, most places will have shoes in a couple different sizes. If you’re worried about this or you’re worried they’ll need them to measure you correctly (incase you say yes) then give the shop a call and see what they recommend. If they do say to bring shoes, just bring a pair of similar height that you could see yourself wearing.

10. Bring a Male Figure
My Dad is very important to me, I value his opinion, but he’s also the furthest thing from a fashion guru that you could imagine. However, I didn’t bring him along for his fashion advice, I brought him for his support and the experience. He came to two of my appointments, after which he said he didn’t want to come to anymore because he wanted to be surprised on the wedding day. He questioned things I never would have and provided male insight that may be similar to that of my fiancé. So if you have a male someone who’s important to you, don’t hesitate thinking it’s out of their swim lane, invite them along!

11. It’s Okay to Get ‘The Feeling’ & Still Not Commit
I found the dress I loved that I knew was ‘the one,’ but I couldn’t pull the trigger that day. I questioned every minor detail about it. I had an appointment the next day at another location, tried on the same dress and still couldn’t do it (mainly because it was in a different location, but still). It took me 2 weeks to call up the shop and make the appointment to officially say yes. There were 2 there that I loved so I decided to put them both on. I almost left again without a dress because I loved them both. But then I again, stared at myself and couldn’t take it off, and knew it was it. I knew it was the one (again).

12. Accessorize
If you have the tiniest thought that this dress could be it, then ask to be accessorized! Put on a veil, a necklace, a hairpiece; try to envision yourself as a dream. Never feel like you are taking up too much time, the consultant will inform you of this as you go. The accessories make a huge difference, but don’t feel married (no pun intended) to them. You normally don’t have to make decisions like that until a few months out. And you aren’t limited to just the shop you find your dress at; Etsy has a huge online marketplace of unique wedding accessories!

13. Verify What They Have Online
Like I mentioned, I spent countless hours researching dresses, mainly on The Knot Look Book App, which gets very very addicting. But I must warn you, not everything they show a shop having online is in store and they also have many many more than what is available online. If there was a specific dress I knew I had to try on from a specific designer, I pulled the style code and called or emailed the shop to see if they had it, they were usually very helpful. No sense in going to a shop for one gown to find out they carry the designer, but not that dress. One time, I sent roughly 40 style codes to a shop and the consultant got back to me within 2 hours and informed me they only had 7 of the styles I inquired about, another reason why spending so much time researching photos isn’t all that necessary.

14. Don’t Be Afraid of The Off-White’s
When the consultant brought in the dress I ended up choosing, I originally thought ‘this is cream, there is no way I can get married in cream.’ I was later informed it was in fact ivory, just a more champagne-colored ivory. Either way, it looked tanner to me than I ever expected my wedding dress to be; however, the consultant pointed out, most people are not going to be wearing shades close to white or ivory, so my dress will look white in comparison. She assured me that if the dress is too white, it could wash me out or negatively impact lighting for pictures.

15. Google Your Dress + ‘Real Weddings’
If you are in between a few dresses because you’re unsure how they may look at your wedding, google the name of your dress along with ‘real weddings’ and you will see pictures of the dress from (you guessed it!) real weddings! It reaffirmed my love for the dress when I was being indecisive and gave me some ideas of how to style it that I would have never thought of!

Book Review: A House in the Sky by Amanda Lindhout & Sara Corbett

HOUSEINTHESKY

Reading is something I’ve always been passionate about, but lately, with such a busy schedule, I find that it falls to the bottom of the list when it comes to what I’d like to squeeze into my free time. I’d much rather mindlessly scroll through Instagram or Pinterest or watch Real Housewives or the Food Network.  While I’m able to get lost in the lives of others through those mediums, I found myself missing the way you can lose yourself in a book and develop true connections with characters for long stretches of time.

And then I discovered audiobooks; I found myself flying through books, using the free option from the library or for the most recent titles, using Audible (you can try it free for 30 days!).

I’m a sucker for memoirs. I’ve always loved non-fiction, but the subject matter tended to bore me; however with memoirs, I’m always significantly more engaged. I was scrolling through the memoirs section on Audible and stumbled across “A House in the Sky” by Amanda Lindhout. After reading the reviews, I was surprised I hadn’t already heard of this story in the news, but it sounded intriguing. One credit later, I began my journey on this incredible tale of strength, courage and freedom.

Amanda Lindhout wrote about her fifteen month abduction in Somalia in A House in the Sky. It is the New York Times bestselling memoir of a woman whose curiosity led her to the world’s most remote places and then into captivity: “Exquisitely told…A young woman’s harrowing coming-of-age story and an extraordinary narrative of forgiveness and spiritual triumph” (The New York Times Book Review).

The amount of detail Lindhout was able to recount from her experience is quite amazing.  I couldn’t put the book down (or press stop, in my situation). I found myself lingering in my car long after I had arrived at work just to finish the chapter; I couldn’t get through it fast enough, but at the same time was devastated when it ended. Lindhout was able to develop the characters so well, that I felt like I was losing a piece of me when I finished; which is always the sign of a truly wonderful author, IMO. However, another reason I love memoirs, is because I can then find more information about the characters long after I’ve finished the story. I wiki’d Lindhout and was able to put a face to the name and learn what has gone on since the memoir was released (SPOILERS!). I have kept up with her site, hoping to see an event pop up that’s nearby – this is what [great] memoirs do to me – ALL IN!

This book gave me the feels. Made me feel like I tend to take things for granted, made me feel like certain things I’m going through aren’t so bad, made me appreciate the food, the shelter, the people around me. I’ve neverbeenso inspired. Lindhout also made me feel like my love for travel is good and necessary. WARNING: Her curiosity of the World is contagious; I envied her ability to GO. The audible version is read by Lindhout, which made even more of a connection.

I don’t want to give too much of this story away, but I will tell you to just go read/listento it. You will not be disappointed.

Have any memoir recommendations you’ve neverbeenso into?
